This book is a gem! Drawing from the author’s many experiences on a crisis hotline and daily life, it quickly provides an understanding of the importance of listening – not trying to help, not validating, not even confirming – just connecting with the other person so that they have the opportunity to talk about what they are experiencing, so that they know that they have been heard. Although it may not make sense rationally that this should make a difference because we haven’t “done” anything, the effects described in this book are profound.The many examples provided include a full range from routine disputes between parents and children to highly charged conversations that help to move callers away from the precipice of suicide. The book also describes how sometimes it’s even enough just to be available to listen. The offer to listen may help those in crisis to face it more calmly because they know they have a safety net.
I’d highly recommend this quick read of practical insights to anyone who wants to help others through stressful situations. The only thing I might add to this book is perhaps a transcript of a complete phone conversation showing what the skilled listener says to keep reminding the caller that they are fully present and listening with all their attention, and encouraging the caller to continue sharing their issues and concerns.

I read the original version of this wonderful book in French and was taken by its simple and practical, yet powerful way of describing and sharing with the reader different techniques of active listening. I thought its content was so important that I carried the book in my purse for several months, reading and rereading bits and pieces of its content in those rare moments of stillness we get in the hectic lives we live. The book travelled with me to different countries and, in one of those trips, as I was reading it in a long-haul flight to Argentina, my neighbour traveller got interested on it; so much so that I ended up giving her my precious copy. Nevertheless, the learnings I took from the book rest with me as I try to apply them on my everyday life. I truly belief that if all of us took more care in listening to others attentively, without judging, without interrupting, without thinking on what our response will be, just listening, the world will be a better place to live in. Congratulations to the author for a fantastic piece.
